Together on that day we quite literally stumbled into the first painted chamber of the tomb. Dijk's memorable cry on that occasion, on catching sight of the inscription naming the tomb's owner ("My God! It's Maya!") reverberated around the world." For Geoffrey Martin and his colleague, the internationally acclaimed discovery of the tomb of Maya was the culmination of a painstaking ten-year search at Saqqara, the burial ground of Memphis, ancient capital of Egypt.
Maya had been Tutankhamun's Treasurer and one of the most powerful men during the boy-king's short reign. Exploration of his tomb, and those of other important officials in the necropolis, has opened a new chapter in our understanding of Egyptian society more than 3,000 years ago. "The Hidden Tombs of Memphis" is Professor Martin's first-hand account of his discoveries. Since 1975, his Anglo-Dutch team has uncovered a series of spectacular funerary monuments, not just of Maya, but of Horemheb; Tutankhamun's Commander-in-Chief and later himself Pharaoh; Ramesses the Great's sister, Princess Tia, and other courtiers of New Kingdom Egypt.
The beautiful wall reliefs and paintings in these tombs have transformed our knowledge of New Kingdom art, hitherto largely dominated by the well-known treasures of ancient Thebes. Many isolated masterpieces in the world's museums can now be linked to the Saqqara monuments from which they originally came, thanks to the author's detective work. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Unread (but blemished), author-autographed oversized softcover. Thames & Hudson (1992) 216 pages. The book is signed by the author, a dedication likely to an admirer) on the first free page (the first blank, unprinted page in the book). The book appears unread (perhaps of course it may have been flipped through once or twice, but there's no discernible indications of the book ever being read), but unfortunately it was evidently bumped pretty hard, likely against the edge of a bookshelf when being carlessly re-shelved. The spine head is mopderately bumped, the paper "skin" of the cover cracked (although it is only a surface crack in the paper covering, not in the spine itself), however every page in the book has a small bump/crinkle at the top inside corner. With that exception the pages are clean, crisp, unmarked, (otherwise) unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. From the ouytside the covers are clean, but in addition to the crack in the paper covering at the spine head, there is also a vertical crease to the front cover, from top edge to bottom edge. It's not very prominent, not easily discerned unless you hold to book up to the light (or run your hand across the cover), but there is undeniably a well-formed if not visually prominent crease all the way across the cover, running vertically top to bottom. Given the cosmetic blemish to the book and the fact that there is a dedication from the author to the original owner of the book, it certainly lacks the "sex appeal" of a "shelf trophy", nonethelessit is clean and by all appearances unread. For those not concerned with whether the book will or will not enhance their social status or intellectual reputation, it's a solid copy with "lots of miles left under the hood". After a career as a professional librarian, Geoffrey Thorndike Martin studied ancient history at University College London, and later went to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, to write a doctoral thesis in Egyptology. He Became Lady Wallis Budge Research Fellow at Christ's Church, Cambridge, in 1966. In 1970 he returned to University College as Lecturer in Egyptology, and is now Edwards Professor of Egyptology at the University of London. He is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute.
Professor Martin began his archaeological career in the Sudan in 1963, and has excavated each winter in Egypt since 1964, mainly in Saqqara, where he is currently directing work for the joint expedition of the Egypt Exploration Society and the Leiden Museum. His other main project has been at Amarna, the capital city of Akhenaten and Nefertiti, where he has recorded and published the Royal Tomb and other monuments in the royal necropolis. He has written many monograms and articles on Egyptological subjects, and has lectured extensively in Great Britain, the United States, and elsewhere.

REVIEW: A fascinating account of an archaeological survey in Saqqara, G.T. Martin takes the readers on a fascinating expedition in the Saqqara area, in search of the lost tombs of general Horemheb and chancellor Maya, two of the most powerfull men during the reign of Tutankhamun. The author discusses the re-discovery, structure and decoration of the tomb of the two dignitaries, as well as the tombs of the Tias, relatives of Ramesses II.
A welcome view into modern Egyptian fieldwork. Geoffrey Martin gives an overview of 15 years of archeological digs and restorations in the Saqqara (Memphis necropolis) area. His descriptions are accessible and include enough background material on the age without it becoming a distraction. The book gives an excellent view of the work being done by modern archeologists, and often hints at the large amounts of research that go on outside of the field season.
