Bété Mask - Ivory Coast

Dimensions: 33 x 15 x 14 cms.
Weight about 0.940 kg without packaging.
Materials: Wood, metal, upholstery nails, natural polychromy.
Presumed seniority: More than 40 years.
Mask of the Bété ethnic group, from
of Côte d'Ivoire, west side of the Sassandra river.
To materialize the hostile forces of the forest, the Bété carved this type of mask that caused horror, Glé or Gré, with quirky features. In the past, this mask presided over peacemaking ceremonies after armed conflicts and participated in customary justice sessions.
The mask, carved from a single piece of wood, has an impressive spider face.
