CUSTOM BUILT F.E. OLDS & SON HYBRID MLBORE
(.460") PROFESSIONAL Bb TRUMPET
WITH A FIDES SYMPHONY 8000 GOLD BRASS BELL ~
SATIN FINISH WITH LIGHTLY TINTED GOLD LACQUER IN SUPERB RESTORED CONDITION
I have been playing horns for 64 years...collecting and restoring vintage trumpets and cornets, producing custom finishes, and building custom horns for 53 years. Over the decades I amassed a vast trumpet/ cornet collection. During the past few years I have thinned out the herd and continue to do so.
All my horns are gig ready...they have been completely disassembled, cleaned, valves are hand lapped and precision adjusted & aligned with new corks & felts when necessary, all slide tubes are hand lapped and polished, and then the horn is re-assembled and play tested. Lastly, the trumpet is disinfected and boxed in order to provide a Covid free purchase.
PLEASE LOOK AT THE OTHER HORNS I HAVE LISTED
For your consideration, here is a custom built hybrid trumpet consisting of a 1966 Olds horn body mated to a Fides Symphony 8000 gold brass bell. I developed this trumpet to be more of a “all around” trumpet, and it has the capability to fit perfectly into any performance situation and part assignment. It comes with an Olds case, and a late '60's Bach 7C mouthpiece that works quite well with the horn. The Fides 8000 Symphony ML in lacquer sold at deep discount for around ,643. IMHO this hybrid is as good as the Fides for a ,500. less.
This trumpet is a medium weight 2 lb. - 6.6 oz. horn that will accommodate virtually any music style and acoustic venue. Agile and efficient, and having an extensive range of tonal colors, this trumpet offers a consistent core of sound throughout all registers and dynamics, with a pitch center to match all its other outstanding performance characteristics. It easily matches and blends with other trumpets and trumpet players. The trumpet has a compact sound with great depth of character and excellent sonority in all registers. It is a free and open blowing horn with a rich tone, and loves to be piloted in the stratosphere where it develops a sophisticated brighter edge with complex overtones. This horn has superb intonation...the low register is not flat, and is very resonant. The 5th harmonic is great, and so is the upper register intonation. Slots are superb. Responsive and flexible, this professional hybrid makes an awesome "all around" horn, thus it shines playing pretty much any music style in pretty much any acoustic venue.
I built this trumpet from vintage Olds parts and a Fides 8000 Symphony, spun one-piece hand hammered gold brass bell. I chose a 1966 Special horn body as it had seen little play time, thus the lightning fast valves are still bright and shiny, have near factory spec compression, and sport new beryllium copper springs and felts. At this juncture, I am sure some of you are concerned that this professional trumpet is nothing more than an Olds Special with a new bell...well, it is, but it's the bells that made Olds trumpets produce different tones, and this Fides gold brass bell makes this trumpet sound unlike any other Olds model. Please read the following passage from the Olds Central website:
"At least one designer of custom trumpets begins every horn with an Olds valve section. He claims to have disassembled virtually every brand of horn on the market, and finds the Olds valves to be the most reliable, trouble free, smooth playing valve section ever made. [
Seller's
note:
I totally agree with the above info, and have built many custom trumpets with Olds blocks as they have fantastic valves, and are virtually bullet proof.] According to Zig Kanstul, the models of trumpets made by Olds in the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's, all were made with the same bell mandrel, to the same specifications - from the Ambassador all the way to the Mendez (although some models used different materials). [
Seller's note:
Every Olds model used the same valve block and pistons which were interchangeable amongst all models. The only major difference between the vintage Olds models were the bells...some were all brass, brass with a solid nickel silver bell flare, Rey-O-loy (bronze), and a solid nickel silver stem with a rose brass flare.] The only exceptions were the Opera (which had a larger bore) and the Custom Crafted model [which had a newly designed "Ultrasonic" spun bell with a narrower taper]. According to another famous Olds designer, Olds was a "one tolerance shop" - in other words, all models of horns were made to the same tolerance. In particular, it is said that this was true from the Ambassador trumpet all the way through to the Mendez.
"
I reversed the 1st valve slide for added pitch adjustment and added a fixed thumb saddle. Both the tuning and 3rd valve slides had their standard water keys replaced with Lee's water keys. All slides operate with silky smoothness. The 3rd slide has an internal stop rod system that is one of the better ideas in the industry (see photo #5).
Mechanically, the horn is in wonderful condition with lightning fast valves that are bright and shiny, without staining nor pitting, and exhibit near factory spec compression. Cosmetically, the trumpet is in excellent restored condition...no dents nor previous repairs. Their are a few shallow dings scattered through the horn, but nothing that can be seen in the photos as they are quite insignificant. The horn was given a bead blasted satin finish and then covered with lightly gold tinted satin lacquer to provide a maintenance free finish. I tend to be overly critical and as accurate as possible when describing my horns, so that no one receives any "surprises". So, bid with confidence as I think you'll find my feedback speaks for itself.
