This is a lovely custom horn built in our shop. The bore of the horn is .468". The bell is 4 3/4". The engraving is crisp and clean. This horn was built using a slightly modified Olds Recording cornet bell and an Olds valve block in .468", but with an extra large bore trumpet style main tuning slide and leadpipe. The extra large bore of the horn and the large bell throat of the cornet bell give the horn a very big and warm sound, while the trumpet layout keeps the horn fast and responsive. Another great feature of these horns is the central location of the valve block, which balances the weight of the horn in the hand very nicely.
We have built several of these horns now because they play very well and they fill a gap in the market. There is a reasonably large demand for flugelhorns in the key of C, but they are very, very rare. Since it is next to impossible to convert a Bb flugelhorn to play in C, we decided to experiment with building a horn that would have the sound of a flugel but be pitched in C. These horns are the result of that research. This horn has first and third valve throw slides (a feature sadly lacking on almost all flugelhorns). The mouthpiece receiver is trumpet shank and the horn has two water keys.
This horn plays very well. The valves move well with very good compression, have little wear and feel very mechanically sound, with no wiggle from side to side. The slides all move well, of course. The leadpipe has "Made in Germany" stamped on the mouthpiece receiver. As for the aesthetic condition of the horn, there are a few very small dings as well as some light scratching on the instrument. All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now--if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This trumpet comes with a mouthpiece and a somewhat worn case.
Of course you will probably want to try the horn out for a trial period and test it to see if it is a good fit for you; once you purchase the horn you have two weeks (14 days) after it arrives at your home to test the horn and decide if it works for you. If you would like to return it you may do so for a full refund, you just have to cover the shipping costs
